Woodturning begins about 1300BC with the Egyptians. The wood was turned with a rope while the tuner used a sharpened tool to cut the wood. From the middle ages in England and other lands, a branch of a flexible tree was used to turn the wood via a rope. This allowed the wood turner to hold the woodturning tools more securely with both hands. This came to be called spring pole turning and were common right up to the 20th Century.
